Research Support Across the Life Cycle

Creative-Pioneering Researchers Program

1. Objective

A. To discover and support early-career researchers with potential, thereby building a foundation for nurturing outstanding researchers.

B. To continuously support creative and challenging research projects, leading to the generation of excellent research outcomes.

 

2. Key Program Details

A. Eligibility

(1) Assistant professors or associate professors newly appointed after March 2022 (as of 2024).

(2) Researchers with the potential to conduct creative and challenging research projects.

B. Funding Amount

 - Up to 80M KRW per year for experimental research projects.

 - Up to 30M KRW per year for theoretical research projects.

C. Support Period

 - Maximum of 9 years (3+3+3 years, no extension allowed).

 - Annual evaluations and phase evaluations will be conducted.

D. Application Process and Required Documents

(1) Announcement: Announced via official letter in early April each year, application deadline at the end of April, and selection in late June.
(2) Required Documents: Research project application form, research proposal, current research activities, research budget plan, etc.

E. Annual and Phase Evaluations

(1) Mid-term evaluations will focus on the level of creativity and challenge, as well as the research process and efforts to ensure continuous research outcome management.
(2) Based on annual evaluations, research funding adjustments will be made. Phase evaluations will be conducted every three years to determine whether to continue support.
(3) The appropriate research period will be determined based on the applicant's desired support period (3, 6, or 9 years) through review.

F. Final Report

(1) Final Research Outcome Submission and Requirements:

 - Research results must be published in domestic or international academic journals or as a specialized academic book.

 - The principal investigator must be listed as the first or corresponding author, and acknowledgment must be included.

(2) Submission Documents:

 - Submit the annual and phase reports, summary report, final report, and one copy of the research outcome to the Research Support Division.

 - Submit the financial report to the Office of Research Affairs.

(3) Submission Deadlines:

 - Annual/Phase Reports: 3 months before the end of the current year/phase.

 - Financial Report: Within 1 month of the end of the current year/phase.

 - Final Report and Research Outcome: Within 2 years of the project’s completion.

New Faculty Startup Fund

1. Objective

A. To enhance the research capabilities of newly appointed professors through research settlement fund support and to attract top domestic and international talent.
B. To increase opportunities for new professors to participate in research, inspiring creative research motivation and improving international research competitiveness.

 

2. Key Program Details

A. Eligibility

 - All applicants who meet the following criteria:

  · Newly appointed full-time faculty in 2024 (including endowment faculty funded by development funds and HK faculty).

  · Newly appointed professors from 2022–2023 who have not yet received research settlement funds.

  · Specially appointed full-time faculty at the College of Medicine will be supported by hospital funds.

[Exclusions]

· Faculty who have already received research settlement funds (e.g., as endowment faculty).

· Part-time faculty, invited faculty, adjunct professors, teaching professors, research professors, lecturers, etc.

· Endowment faculty supported by Seoul National University Hospital.

B. Support Details

 - Research Period: 2 years (with a possible extension of up to 1 year).

 - Research Funding per Faculty Member:
  · Up to 50M KRW for "survey, literature, or theoretical research."
  · Up to 100M KRW for "experimental or practical research."

 

C. Application Process and Required Documents

 - Announcement:

  · Spring semester: Announced via official letter in February each year, with applications due in March and selection by the end of March.

  · Fall semester: Announced via official letter in August each year, with applications due in September and selection by the end of September.

 - Required Documents: Research project application form, research proposal, current research activities, research budget plan, etc.

 - Research Start Dates:

  · Spring semester: April 2024

  · Fall semester: October 2024

 

D. Final Report

(1) Submission of Final Research Outcome and Requirements:

 - Published papers in academic journals, books, conference presentations (proceedings, abstracts), lecture materials.

(2) Required Documents:

 - Submit the summary report, final report, and one copy of the research outcome to the Research Support Division.

 - Submit the financial report to the Office of Research Affairs.

(3) Submission Deadlines:

 - Financial report and summary report: Within 2 months of the research period’s end.

 - Final report and research outcomes: Within 2 years of the research period’s end.

 

3. Additional Information (Work Conditions Related to Support)

 - The research settlement fund is provided on the condition that the newly appointed professor serves for at least 3 years. If the professor resigns within 3 years, they must return the entire research fund, even if research outcomes have been submitted.

Bridging Fund

1. Objective

A. To provide urgent bridging research funding to mid-career researchers experiencing temporary reductions in research funds, ensuring continuity in their research activities.

B. To strengthen the sustainability of research by fostering collaboration between senior faculty nearing retirement and the next generation of researchers, thereby passing down academic knowledge and expertise.

 

2. Key Program Details

A. Eligibility

(1) Type I-1: Mid-Career Researcher Bridging Support

 - Faculty who have served as associate professors for 3 or more years as of September 1, 2024, or professors (including endowment and HK faculty).

  ① Faculty whose average total research funding in the past 3 years (July 1, 2021 - June 30, 2024) exceeded 100M KRW for the humanities and social sciences and 400M KRW for STEM fields,

  ② and whose total research funding as of July 1, 2024, has decreased by 50% or more compared to the previous period.

(2) [Newly Established] Type I-2: Mid-Career Researcher Bridging Support

 - A temporary program to respond to the 2024 government R&D budget cuts.

 - Faculty who have served as associate professors for 3 or more years as of September 1, 2024, or professors (including endowment and HK faculty).

  ① Faculty whose total research funding in the past year (July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024) exceeded 100M KRW for the humanities and social sciences and 400M KRW for STEM fields,

  ② and whose total research funding as of July 1, 2024, has decreased by 50% or more compared to the previous period.

(3) Type II: Senior Researcher Bridging Support

 - Professors aged 60 or older as of September 1, 2024, with 3 or more years remaining until retirement,

 - whose total research funding in the past year (July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024) did not exceed 100M KRW for the humanities, social sciences, and arts, or 150M KRW for STEM and medical fields.

 

B. Funding Amount

(1) Type I-1: Up to 100M KRW per year per project.
(2) Type I-2 and Type II: Up to 50M KRW per year per project.

 - Humanities, social sciences, and arts: 20M KRW (30M KRW for collaborative research).

 - STEM and medical fields: 30M KRW (50M KRW for collaborative research).

 - Additional points and increased funding will be provided if senior faculty collaborate with junior faculty.

 

C. Support Period: 1 year (with a possible extension of up to 1 year; for Type II, the extension is limited to the remaining time until retirement).

 

D. Application Process and Required Documents

(1) Announcement: Announced via official letter in July-August each year, with applications due by the end of the same period and selections made by August-September.

(2) Required Documents: Research project application form, research proposal, current research activities, research budget plan, etc.

 

E. Final Report

(1) Submission of Final Research Outcome and Requirements:

 - Research results must be published in domestic or international academic journals or as a specialized academic book.

 - The principal investigator must be listed as the first or corresponding author, and acknowledgment must be included.

(2) Required Documents:

Diverse and Future Foundational Discipline Establishment Program

1. Objective

A. To support the independent and collaborative research activities of researchers in basic academic fields, facilitating the accumulation of academic achievements and research experience.

B. To encourage challenging research activities that pioneer new academic agendas through the promotion of collaborative writing.

 

2. Key Program Details

A. Eligibility: Full-time, endowment, and HK faculty currently employed at the university.

B. Funding Amount

(1) Independent Research: Up to 10M KRW per project (up to 15M KRW for monographs).

(2) Collaborative Writing:

 - 2–3 researchers: Up to 30M KRW per year.

 - 4 researchers: Up to 40M KRW per year.

 - 5 or more researchers: Up to 50M KRW per project.

C. Support Period

 - 1 year for independent research and collaborative writing (with a possible extension of up to 1 year).

D. Application Process and Required Documents

(1) Announcement: Announced via official letter in May each year, with applications due in early June and selections made by the end of July.

(2) Required Documents: Research project application form, research proposal, current research activities, research budget plan, etc.

E. Final Report

(1) Submission of Final Research Outcome and Requirements:

 - Independent Research (Papers): Must be published in domestic or international academic journals, with the principal investigator listed as the first or corresponding author.

  * Journals included: SCI-level (SCIE, SSCI, A&HCI, SCOPUS), KCI-level (excellence, registered, candidate).

 - Independent Research (Creative Works in the Arts): Solo or two-person exhibitions, two-person performances, concerts, or albums (including digital music).

 - Independent Research (Monographs) and Collaborative Writing: A scanned copy of the published book, including the cover, table of contents, acknowledgment, and ISBN.

  * It is preferred that the book be published by the Seoul National University Press.

(2) Required Documents:

 - Submit the final report and one copy of the research outcome to the Research Support Division.

 - Submit the financial report to the Office of Research Affairs.

(3) Submission Deadlines:

 - Financial Report: Within 2 months of the end of the research period.

 - Final Report and Research Outcome: Within 2 years of the end of the research period.

Ascending SNU Future Leader Fellowship Support Program

1. Objective

To support exceptional postdoctoral researchers with high growth potential, both domestically and internationally, thus promoting the modernization of the university's research workforce and laying the foundation for research innovation.

 

2. Key Program Details

A. Eligibility

 - Individuals who obtained their PhD within the last 2 years or are expected to obtain their PhD by February 2024 (no nationality restrictions).

[Exclusions]

- Full-time faculty at the university are not eligible.

 - Researchers affiliated with other institutions or unemployed individuals are eligible only if they can be appointed as a researcher at the university before the research start date.

 - Maternity and parental leave periods are excluded from the PhD attainment period calculation (must provide official documentation).

B. Funding Amount

 - Experimental Fields: Up to 70M KRW per project per year.

 - Theoretical Fields: Up to 50M KRW per project per year.

  * Up to 50M KRW of the project funding can be allocated to personnel costs (based on the researcher’s position).

C. Support Period

 - 1 year.

D. Application Process and Required Documents

(1) Announcement: Announced via official letter each January, with applications due in early February and selections made in March.

(2) Required Documents: Research project application form, research proposal, current research activities, research budget plan, etc.

E. Final Report

(1) Submission of Final Research Outcome:

 - One of the following research outcomes must be submitted:

 1. A paper published in a domestic or international academic journal,

 2. A specialized academic book,

 3. Conference proceedings,

 4. Lecture materials.

  ※ Research outcomes published within 6 months of the project start date will not be recognized.

 - The principal investigator must be listed as the first or corresponding author, and acknowledgment must be included.

(2) Required Documents:

 - Submit the summary report, final report, and one copy of the research outcome to the Research Support Division.

 - Submit the financial report to the Office of Research Affairs.

(3) Submission Deadlines:

 - Financial Report and Summary Report: Within 1 month of the end of the research period.

 - Final Report and Research Outcomes: Within 2 years of the end of the research period.

Advanced Medical and Pharmaceutical Researcher Training Support Program

1. Objective

To actively foster and support highly skilled professionals who will lead and conduct interdisciplinary research in the advanced bio sector, a future growth engine.

 

2. Key Program Details

A. Eligibility

 - Students enrolled in doctoral or integrated master’s-doctoral programs in graduate schools who hold medical, dental, veterinary, or pharmacist licenses (regardless of specialization).

B. Funding Amount: 20M KRW per individual per year.

C. Support Period: 1 year.

D. Application Process and Required Documents

(1) Announcement: Announced via official letter in September each year, with applications due in early October and selections made in November.

(2) Required Documents: Research project application form, research proposal, research budget plan, etc.

E. Final Report

(1) Required Documents:

 - Submit one copy of the research project final report to the Research Support Division.

 - Submit one copy of the research expense report to the Office of Research Affairs.

(2) Submission Deadlines:

 - Research expense report and final report: Within 2 months of the end of the research period.
